Each person going on the voyage paid £10 (£10000 today) for a single share or £20 for a double share. The passengers formed a joint-stock company with London merchants. Samuel would have known of these arrangements which offered possible solutions for his problem. To anyone paying his own way to Virginia, the Company assigned fifty acres in the colony. ![]() Zouche was an active member of the Virginia Company, which in 1618 began transporting children from London to meet a severe shortage of labour. He was also particularly well placed “to provide for the education & maintenance of these children in a place remote from those partes where these great blotts and blemishes may fall upon them” – where they would cause no embarrassment. The Right Honourable Edward Lord Zouche may have been sympathetic to Samuel’s marital troubles for he had also discarded a wife who did not please him. It describes the famous voyage from the perspective of Mary Brewster, wife of William Brewster who was one of the most well-known Pilgrims. 'Journeys Over Land and Sea' has been written by Dr Anna Scott, West Lindsey District Council's Mayflower 400 Officer, and illustrated by Neil Baker of Electric Egg. An illustrated children's book launched in November 2020 which explores the lesser-known parts of the Mayflower story from before the ship set sail.
